Bulls Turn Down Gordon for Marbury Trade
September 24th, 2008 by Andrew WamboldtBack at the end of August, we wrote about how Ben Gordon wants to be a New York Knick. This was not too shocking, as Ben Gordon was one of the main proponents for Mike D’Antoni as the head coach of the Bulls, the Knicks aren’t shy about handing out large contracts, and on the Knicks side of things, Gordon would instantly become their best player and go to guy.
The NY Daily News is reporting that Donnie Walsh has had discussions with Bulls general manager John Paxson about a Gordon for Marbury swap, but the Bulls showed very little interest in the trade idea. This is the second such trade of this nature that the Bulls have turned down, previously turning down a trade involving Shawn Marion.
So what exactly are the Bulls looking to do in the Ben Gordon situation? Shawn Marion fits the bill of both expiring contract and a good player that you can sell to fans. Stephon Marbury is an even bigger expiring contract, and a guy the Bulls could just send home right away to clear up the guard glut. The Marbury trade would undoubtedly let the Bulls dump a bad contract on the Knicks, either Larry Hughes, whose contract really isn’t that bad anymore or Andres Nocioni, who could be sold to Knicks fans as a good player, and not just a bad contract.
If the Bulls aren’t accepting these types of trades involving Gordon, they simply don’t have much interest at trading Gordon at all.
