Ben Gordon To Compete In H.O.R.S.E.

February 4th, 2009 by Andrew Wamboldt

According to ESPN’s Daily Dime, Ben Gordon will participate in the Allstar Weekend H.O.R.S.E. competition. Earlier today, it was reported that Ben Gordon was not invited to the three point shootout, despite being one of the best long range shooters in the league since being drafted in 2004.

Ben Gordon will square off against Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks, Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics, and Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat.

It seems as if Gordon will do quite well in this contest. Gordon has made a career out of making ridiculously hard shots. Dwyane Wade has the advantage of great body control for the shots close to the basket. Dirk and Garnett have the advantage of being taller for the close to the basket shots. Ben Gordon’s advantage is being by far the best shooter of the group.

This event, if Gordon is able to pull off the win, will be a bit bigger than a win in the three point contest, as Gordon will be going up against actual superstars of the NBA in this contest. Hopefully Ben does well here.

I posted this on Blog-A-Bull and the guys there seem to believe that ESPN screwed up a press reading since the Bulls, Mavs, Heat and Celtics are playing the night before All-Star Weekend. Hopefully it is true though because that would be a great lineup.

  2. Andrew Wamboldt Says:

It will be interesting to see how it turns out. I would hope the world wide leader in sports doesn’t make this type of error.

The obvious problem is that the original press release said 3, and this is 4 players, and it’s obviously the same from the TNT Double Header. That leads to doubt of it, but it would make a lot of sense for TNT to hype up the contest by using 4 players who were part of their double header. It’s possible that TNT may have originally planned to have it as Wade, Dirk, and Garnett, but then added Gordon when they saw that he wasn’t invited to the three point contest. Four people is better competition than three imo anyhow.

It will be interesting to see how the NBA handles this, now that ESPN may have possibly said that the wrong players are participating and excited fans. After the backlash from Gordon not being in the three point contest, to the initial excitement over the HORSE contest, even if they weren’t planning to have Gordon, that they are now.

It’ll be a shame if Gordon doesn’t actually get to go to this, because he deserves to be part of the Allstar Weekend festivities….as part of the three point contest, but he was ridiculously snubbed.

  3. BullsKY Says:

Yeah, he was unjustly snubbed for some guys that are FAR LESS POPULAR than he is. Not that the 3 point contest has always had the most popular guys featured in it but it never hurts to put a star player on the bill. Daequan Cook and Roger Mason over BG? Terrible decision.
