Luol Deng and Ben Gordon Not Playing For Great Britain This Summer

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

According to mirror.co.uk, Luol Deng will not participate for Great Britain this summer as he still tries to recover from the stress fracture that he suffered last summer.

Following reports that he was not playing, Deng addressed the rumors in a conference call with reporters. In the conference call, it was revealed that Ben Gordon also would not play, because he needs to acclimate himself to Detroit.

Q: Does it surprise you given Ben Gordon’s situation that he decided not to play?

A: Ben was very interested in playing. I don’t believe that his decision came from me not playing. I really believe that Ben thought he might be back here with the Bulls and I think it would have been an easier summer: Coming back to play for the same team, the same place, the same house. But now I think that his summer and his plans have all changed. Now he signed with Detroit, he has to go back there and get a place and work out, he has to get adjusted to new guys so right now with the new team I think Ben is making the right decision by committing to Detroit. He just signed with them and they’re looking for big things from him. That said, I am really looking forward to the future, as I am sure he will one day play for GB. Unfortunately he didn’t come back to the Bulls, if he would have signed back with us not only would I be playing with him with GB but also back here. He was a great teammate.

Without both Gordon and Deng, Great Britain seems hopeless going into Eurobasket. I would expect Great Britain to be blown out in almost every game in the tournament.

Luol Deng, the Defiabull

Monday, March 16th, 2009

According to The Times, Luol Deng will reject that advice of his trainer, David Thorpe, and likely the Chicago Bulls, and play for the Great Britain National Team this summer.

Luol Deng will fly in the face of advice from his personal coach and, most likely, his club, the Chicago Bulls, to play for Great Britain in the European Championship finals this summer.

The 6ft 9in forward is at present sidelined with a stress fracture of his right leg that may require minor surgery, the latest in a series of niggling injuries that have plagued Deng since his international debut.

As is common in the NBA, Deng works with a personal coach during the summer, in his case David Thorpe, the respected media pundit. Thorpe echoed the Bulls’ concerns about Deng playing in internationals and advised him to take a summer off to recuperate fully.

However, the suggestion was rejected by Deng, who is adamant that he will be in Chris Finch’s squad when they play their EuroBasket group games against Spain, Serbia and Slovenia in Poland in September.

“I recommended to him that he take the whole summer off and not even train with me,” Thorpe said. “But Luol told me that was not acceptable. There is no way he is not going to help GB in some capacity. He will maybe not play as many friendlies. He will maybe adjust his schedule after consulting with Coach Finch and coming up with a plan that makes sense for everybody.

“Luol feels a sense of duty as far as GB is concerned but he also loves playing for the team and in the style that Coach Finch plays. That’s what’s driving Lu on and as soon as he is healthy, we will sit down with doctors from the Bulls and from GB to come up with a plan.”

I think that Luol Deng’s commitment to the Great Britain National Team is quite admirable. He has done a lot of good for basketball in Great Britain, leading them to qualification for the 2009 European Championships this summer. He has helped to recruit major talent to the Great Britain team, namely his friend and Chicago Bulls teammate, Ben Gordon. With Gordon on hand, Great Britain could be a major contender to win the European Championship this summer.

But Deng’s lack of respect towards the NBA team that decided to pay him $80 million is less than admirable. According to Sam Smith, he is jealous of the Bulls’ rookie, Derrick Rose. He has produced at unacceptable levels of production and efficiency this year, and many believe that his subpar production has to do with his nagging injuries.

One thing that has become clear this year is that Luol Deng is an injury prone player. His body just doesn’t handle the stress of strenuous physical activity very well. Playing for Great Britain will only add increased wear and tear on Deng’s body, which will make him more susceptible to being injured during the NBA season.

It would be wise for Deng, in terms of his NBA career, to just rest this summer. But for Deng, his career isn’t just about the NBA. Playing for Great Britain seems to be equally important to Deng as is playing for the Bulls. This is something the Bulls will have to deal with going forward. If they don’t like this, and see this as something that will just result in Deng getting injured every year, they might need to seek out potential trade suitors for Deng.

Ben Gordon to Play for Great Britain

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Ben Gordon has confirmed to Ian Whitell of The Times that he will make his debut for Great Britain this summer.

“I’m just hoping this summer I’ll be able to play,” Gordon said. “If everything goes according to plan, I will. I’m going to be an unrestricted free agent, which gives me a little bit more freedom with different teams. I’m hoping I can get my deal out of the way and move on with a clear mind.”

Born in Hammersmith, West London, Gordon moved to New York before his first birthday and, after his parents separated, Gordon would make annual summer visits to Wembley to see his family until into his teens, when his promising basketball career forced him to remain in the United States. “I used to love going to England,” Gordon said. “I used to come back and see all my cousins and relatives I hadn’t seen in a while. I have really good memories.

“I still have a lot of relatives in England and keep in touch with all of them. They come over and visit me in the summer, but I just haven’t been able to go back and forth as I would like to because of my schedule.

“I definitely do feel a tie with Britain. My Mum and some of her customs are very British. She brought me up having a cup of tea every morning, and two or three times during the day, which I guess is a British thing, and lots of my family still go back regularly and bring me tea and chocolates and things you can’t get here.

“I talk to my relatives in England regularly and they’re pumped about me playing, in fact they’d been hoping I would play the last couple of summers. Things didn’t go my way to do that, so I feel I let them down a little and I haven’t really spoken to them too much about it this year. I don’t want to get them too excited until I know I’m playing for sure.”

“We’re thrilled with how it’s gone with Ben,” Wuotila said. “He’s been easy to deal with and he’s a world-class scorer. He’s probably in the top ten to 20 players in the world in his ability to score the jump shot, penetrate to the basket. That’s hard to come by.”

Things should go much smoother for Ben this summer, as he will be an unrestricted free agent. This past summer, Gordon missed out on playing for Great Britain because of contract uncertainty, as his contract negotiations spilled into October, when he accepted the qualifying offer. This summer, as an unrestricted free agent, the market should move much quicker, and Gordon should have contract certainty within the first few days of July.

Great Britain will be playing in the 2009 European Championship in Poland this summer in an attempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London. Great Britain has been placed in a group with Spain, Serbia, and Slovenia.

The process for getting Gordon to play should be much smoother than it has been for Deng. Gordon has not suffered any serious injuries during his career, and will avoid the insurance mess that Deng was in last year.

Ben Gordon should be one of the premier players to play internationally. Gordon’s game is perfectly suited for the current FIBA rules thanks to his elite jumpshooting.

Great Britain also is looking to add Kelenna Azubuike to their roster for this summer.

With Kelenna Azubuike, Ben Gordon, and Luol Deng on the roster, Great Britain will have a realistic chance at becoming the 2009 European champions.

Great Britain Qualifies for 2009 European Championship

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Great Britain’s path to qualifying for the 2009 European Championship started off rough, with an overtime loss to Israel. Many were worrying about whether the other players had enough time to gel with Luol Deng, who joined the team late. Since that first loss, Great Britain has dominated Group D, and has now qualified for the 2009 European Championship as the winner of Group D.

Great Britain clinched there spot in the 2009 European Championships with a 67-63 win over the Czech Republic. This is Great Britain’s second win of the tournament against the Czech Republic. Previously, Great Britain defeated them 87-68 in a game where Great Britain had to redeem itself from the Israel loss.

While this game was closer than the previous game against the Czech Republic, the driving forces behind the victory were the same. Luol Deng scored 21 points and Nate Reinking added 20 points for Great Britain to lead them to victory. In their previous victory against the Czech Republic, Deng scored 21 points and Reinking added 22 points.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu had another solid game against the Czech Republic with 9 points and 11 rebounds. In their previous game against the Czech Republic, Mensah-Bonsu had 13 points 16 rebounds 3 steals and 3 blocks.

Luol Deng again had turnover problems, having 5 in the game. Great Britain had 22 turnovers as a team.

Despite their turnover problems, Great Britain was still able to overcome Jiri Welsch’s 28 point scoring burst, for the victory.

With this victory, Great Britain probably has proven all they needed to that they are competitive enough to deserve the host spot in the 2012 Olympics in London.

Great Britain will wrap up its play in the qualifying portion of the tournament on Saturday in a game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Great Britain vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina Recap

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Great Britain defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina this afternoon, 82-74, to maintain its spot in first place in Group D of the 2009 European Championship Qualifying tournament.

Bosnia and Herzegovina played Great Britain tough in the first quarter, trailing Great Britain 20-18 after the first quarter. They continued to play Great Britain tough, making it a tie game, 41-41 at half time.

Unlike in the last game against the Czech Republic, Luol Deng had a strong first half this game. Luol Deng finished the first half with 14 points.

Great Britain started the 3rd quarter on a 17-2 run to race ahead to a 58-43 lead halfway into the quarter. Luol Deng drained two three point field goals during this run. Great Britain led 66-52 after three quarters.

Bosnia and Herzegovina was able to bring the lead down to only 6 points, but Great Britain responded with a tip in by Andrew Sullivan off of a missed Flinder Boyd layup attempt. This was followed by a Nate Reinking layup, a Pops Mensah-Bonsu slam dunk, and a Luol Deng three pointer to cap off the run. This run gave Great Britain a 15 point lead with just under 4 minutes remaining, allowing Great Britain to go into cruise control mode.

Luol Deng finished the game with 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Luol Deng looked a bit more comfortable in the first option role today, however, he is still struggling with turnovers. Most of Deng’s turnovers were ballhandling related or traveling related. These are not that indifferent from Ben Gordon’s classic turnovers. These types of turnovers seem to be the result of trying to create offense with the entire defense being focused solely on one player.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu finished the game with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Mensah-Bonsu has slid nicely into the role of Deng’s number two man.

Chris Finch made the determination that Andy Betts was not quite ready to play in this game. Prior to the game, there were reports that Andy Betts might be available for today’s game.

Following this game, Great Britain is in first place in Group D. Both Great Britain and the Czech Republic have 2-1 records, but Great Britain is winning the point tiebreaker by one point (Great Britain has a 17 point differential and the Czech Republic has a 16 point differential).

Great Britain’s next game is on September 13th, against Israel, in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Great Britain vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina Preview

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

The Great Britain National Team will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina today at 1:30 CT in Birmingham, England. Great Britain is coming off a powerful 87-68 victory over the Czech Republic. Bosnia and Herzegovina is coming off a 77-71 victory over Israel.

Right now, after tiebreakers, Great Britain is currently in first place. Right now, all four teams are sitting at 1-1 records, so the tournament is up for grabs for whoever wants it.

Luol Deng comes into the game as the leading scorer for Great Britain at 25.5 PPG. He is currently trying to become comfortable in the role of a number one option.

Great Britain have their star center, Andy Betts, for the first game in this tournament. Betts has been suffering from a back injury. Chris Finch will stick with the same starting lineup, however, and bring Betts off the bench.

Bosnia and Herzegovina really does not have anyone of note on their team. According to betting sites, Great Britain is about a 7 point favorite in this game.

Great Britain vs. Czech Republic Recap

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

After a disappointing loss to Israel in their first game of the qualifying rounds for the 2009 European Championship, Great Britain was able to bounce back and defeat the Czech Republic 87-68.

Great Britain leaped ahead to an early lead behind the scoring prowess of Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Nate Reinking. Mensah-Bonsu had 8 points in the first 6 minutes of the game, helping Great Britain to an early 10-4 lead. Then Nate Reinking took over the scoring load, finishing the first quarter with 7 points.

Great Britain held strong in the 2nd quarter, leaving the quarter with the same 14 point lead that they entered it with.

Luol Deng was terrible in the first half, only scoring 1 point on 0-3 shooting, with a turnover. Luol Deng looked very passive in the first half, although that was okay for this game, with Mensah-Bonsu and Reinking carrying the load in the first half.

Great Britain relented a little bit, allowing the Czech Republic to cut the lead down to 8 behind a pair of shots from Peter Benda, but Reinking and Deng led Great Britain to a 55-37 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Great Britain was just on cruise control for the rest of the game, with the game in hand, and cruised to victory.

Luol Deng finished with 21 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks. Pops Mensah-Bonsu finished with 13 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Nate Reinking finished with 22 points.

Jiri Welsch, a former NBA player, is the only play on the Czech Republic who had a good game. Welsch finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds.

Overall today, Luol Deng failed in establishing himself as a dependable first option. Deng had 14 of his 21 points in the 4th quarter, when the game was already out of reach for the Czech Republic. This has been a common complaint of Deng. Gordon is said to always score when it matters, such as in the 4th quarter of a close game, while Deng scores his points when it doesn’t matter, in the first quarter or the fourth quarter of a blow out game. (The former argument is rather silly, as those points in the first quarter help in winning games).

It looks more and more like Deng will never develop into that player you can depend on when the going gets tough, but rather be a great complement to great players who can fill that role.

Great Britain is currently ranked 2nd in Group D, behind Israel. Israel plays Bosnia and Herzegovina later today.

Great Britain’s next game is on September 10th, in Birgmingham, United Kingdom at 1:30 PM CT.
