Chicago Bullseye 73 - Fred Goes To the Berto Center

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

In Chicago Bullseye 73, Fred Pfeiffer recollects about his trip to the Berto Center for the Bulls Fantasy Game, which his wife bought him tickets for. The game was coached by Joakim Noah and Bill Wennington.

You can listen to part 1 here, and part 2 here.

In this podcast, Fred breaks down what it’s like to be a participant in the Bulls Fantasy game, and gives a recap of the game, and tells how Joakim Noah was forced to employ a box and 1 defense to stop him.

The most interesting part of the podcast is Fred talking about the conversations he had with Joakim Noah and Bill Wennington. Fred and Bill Wennington spent the majority of halftime and the second half discussing Ben Gordon.

The podcast is a great listen, and I think every Bulls fan should check this one out.

Tyrus Getting Traded? Bulls Moving Up?

Monday, May 18th, 2009

On the latest episode of The Bullsbeat Podcast, Jonathan Givony of Draftexpress.com comes to discuss the NBA Draft, and Givony brought with him two great rumors.

The first rumor is that the Bulls are looking to trade Tyrus Thomas.

The second rumor is that the Bulls are working out guys that you would not expect, and that they could be looking to move into the top 10.

I could see the Bulls seeking to get some value for Tyrus Thomas, as they might not be planning on paying him the amount he will want in an extension. If you can use Tyrus Thomas and your two draft picks to move up substantially in the draft, it’s probably worth it.

There aren’t many guys I would necessarily move up too much for in this draft. Blake Griffin, if made available, obviously go out and get him. Stephen Curry is another guy I would like, but he would just be a sixth man, so I wouldn’t want to give up a power forward in Tyrus for him. Hasheem Thabeet is another guy I think the Bulls might have an eye on. Our interior defense was horrible, and Thabeet would substantially improve our defense.

Another possibility of course is that the Bulls are going to be trading Tyrus Thomas, simply for the fact, they will be bringing in an Amare Stoudemire, Carlos Boozer, David West, Chris Bosh. There is no real use for keeping Thomas around when you’re getting one of those guys, and he is probably involved in that trade anyhow.

It will be interesting to see what comes of these rumors as we approach the draft.

Bulls Beat #90 - The Depression Part 2

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Doug Thonus has released the 90th episode of the Bulls Beat Podcast, entitled The Depression Part 2.

Everything that Doug has heard behind closed doors says there is a huge disconnect between the coach and the players. He has heard that none of the players care for Vinny Del Negro and that Del Negro is trying to get the players respect, bt he doesn’t have it.

From Doug’s perspective, Vinny doesn’t run any offense or defense to warrant the players’ respect. He thinks that Del Negro is not doing his job.

“Vinny Del Negro is dead on arrival as a head coach in the NBA,” said Thonus.

Doug has heard that Vinny is not using the staff around him to improve the situation.

Bulls Beat #89 - The Sky is Falling

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Doug Thonus has released the 89th episode of the Bulls Beat Podcast.

Vinny Del Negro has to go. That is what Doug is yelling these days. Del Negro is gone a the end of the year. Doug thinks the Bulls should just fire Del Negro right now since they have three legit NBA head coaches sitting on the bench in Bob Ociepka, Bernie Bickerstaff, and Del Harris.

The players have completely tuned out Vinny. During the summer, Vinny made a bunch of promises to the players on how he was going to run the team that he failed to keep.

Vinny is a players coach who the players don’t like.

Vinny was just being spiteful when he fined the guys for eating in the locker room. The team provides food to its players in the locker room. This was a team rule, but no one has followed it in the past. (Apparently not even the Bulls staff, who provides the players with food).

So far this season, Vinny has not been leaning on his assistant coaches. The assistants have just been working on player development.

If there is one thing to take away from this is podcast is that Doug thinks that Vinny Del Negro has to be fired, and has to be fired soon. I completely agree.

Ben Gordon Has One Foot Out the Door?

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Doug Thonus has released the 84th episode of the Bulls Beat podcast and he has some great inside information on the state of the team.

Ben Gordon has so far, according to Thonus, been acting internally like he has one foot out the door. Gordon has felt disrepsected by the organization, especially after the Bulls pulled their contract offer to Ben off the table and would not allow him to sign a long term contract

Off the record, everyone around the Bulls organization says that they want Kirk Hinrich over Ben Gordon and that they think that Kirk Hinrich is a better fit next to Derrick Rose than Ben Gordon. So far, Ben Gordon really has not been working with Derrick Rose in the way that Kirk Hinrich has.

Kirk Hinrich has been working with Derrick Rose even while injured, trying to be Rose’s buddy. Hinrich has tried to help Rose with some defensive things during games. The Bulls like that Kirk Hinrich has been a good organizational player and are very high on Kirk because of his devotion to the team.

Ben Gordon feels so disrespected from all of this, that he might be willing to agree to a trade when Kirk Hinrich comes back because he fears that his minutes might fall through the floor.

Gordon, if traded, loses all bird rights. Therefore, the team he is traded to, if they wish to maintain Gordon, has to have cap space to re-sign Gordon. Therefore, for Gordon to be traded, one of two things will have to be going on. The first possibility is that Gordon got strong indications from a team like Miami last season that he feels there is no risk of being a player with no bird rights. The second possibility is that a team like Miami, who will have capspace next offseason, will trade for Gordon now to get him adjusted to their system earlier than next offseason.

A team like San Antonio could be the perfect team to grab Ben Gordon as a one year rental. The Spurs could offer the Bulls some players that expire before 2010 in exchange for both Ben Gordon and Andres Nocioni. For a team like the Spurs whose window is closing, one year of Gordon would be worth it to them.

Also, according to Thonus, Vinny Del Negro is the man in charge. The offensive and defensive systems that the Bulls run are all his. Bernie Bickerstaff, Del Harris, and Bob Ociepka are just working with the players to help them improve and implement Vinny’s system.

Joakim Noah has remained pretty upbeat still. Noah is still trying to work hard. He feels that he is going to get things done.

Tyrus Thomas on the other hand is starting to get bullish. Thomas is disappointed in how his season has gone so far. Scott Skiles had told Tyrus not to take jumpers. Del Negro’s staff came in and told Thomas that it was okay for him to take jumpers. After his bad shooting games to start off the season, they came back and told him not to take jumpshots. Thomas is disappointed that they did not let him work through his shooting struggles a little longer.

Bulls Beat #66 - More fun than a poke in the eye

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Doug Thonus has released the 66th episode of the Bulls Beat podcast. In this episode, Doug discussed the whirlwind surrounding Gordon signing the qualifying offer, a mystery quote about Derrick Rose, comments on Joakim Noah, and comments from Vinny Del Negro on the backcourt log jam.

Doug guesses that the $55 million offer was possibly a result of the Bulls signing Michael Ruffin. That additional salary could have cut the total amount that the Bulls could give Ben Gordon while staying under the luxury tax from $58 million to $55 million as a result of a smaller base year.

He thinks that Joakim Noah’s eye injury had to be really really bad for Noah to be out for five days, because the eye is one of the fastest healing parts on the body. Doug attests to this with his own poked in the eye story.

Also, don’t forget about the Bulls Beat contest, which will give you a chance to win 2 free Bulls tickets to a game this year.
