Wizards Talking Caron Butler For Kirk Hinrich

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

According to Mike Jones, a former Washington Wizards beat writer, Caron Butler and Mike James could be traded to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Kirk Hinrich and Jerome James.

The Wizards might not have a hard time dealing Caron Butler in a package deal with James, however, but not to Houston. I’m hearing Butler and James could be headed to either Miami or Chicago. Some of the pieces Washington could be trying to get back from Chicago, the source said, could be Kirk Hinrich and Jerome James.

The trade puts a little more money on the Bulls’ salaries next year as Caron Butler makes $1.56 million more than Kirk Hinrich next year. Mike James’ and Jerome James’ expiring contracts cancel each other out. Past next season, Butler’s contract is more favorable than Hinrich’s, as it expires after next season, while Hinrich’s contract has an additional year.

Caron Butler is having a down year right now, averaging 16.9 points on 52.0 TS%, but that is still world’s better than Hinrich’s season, in which he is averaging 8.5 points on 44.7 TS%.

If this is trade is indeed on the table, the Bulls should take it, and then find away to move John Salmons for an expiring contract in order to keep their 2010 flexibility as good as possible. The trade is a no brainer talent wise, as even in his down year, Butler is a significant upgrade over Hinrich.

Washington Wizards 113 vs. Chicago Bulls 90

Friday, February 27th, 2009

The Chicago Bulls embarassed themselves so badly tonight that the president of the United States didn’t bother to stick around for the finish, as the Bulls were blown out by the Washington Wizards 113 to 90.

A large part of the Bulls problems tonight came from their starting backcourt. Ben Gordon had 11 points on a horrific 3-14 shooting. He also had 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. His shot was just off tonight, and he was getting blocked on some of his drives to the basket. Gordon had some difficulty guarding Nick Young in the second quarter. Derrick Rose only had 10 points, 3 assists, along with 5 turnovers. He, like Gordon, could never get anything going.

I think that those two had some problems as the result of the offense, or to put it more accurately, the lack of offense. The Bulls really never had a set offense in place tonight. They didn’t run that curl play for Gordon at all. Rather, the Bulls just moved around the perimeter, looking for their guards to create something. That’s not really a very effective offensive strategy. Del Negro has to step up his coaching.

John Salmons, however, off the bench played great. He had 25 points on 8-13 shooting. He was scoring in a variety of ways. He stroked it from long range, going 2-4 from three, and scored on some nice drives to the basket.

Unfortunately Salmons’ scoring outburst was no match for that of the Wizards’ Antawn Jamison. Jamison had 27 points and 11 rebounds and could not be stopped by any of the Bulls defenders.

The Bulls big men as a whole were terrible tonight on the defensive end. They provided little resistance in the paint and gave up 19 offensive rebounds to Washington.

Brad Miller had 9 points and 11 rebounds and Joakim Noah added in 9 points and 9 rebounds as both were solid overall tonight. Tim Thomas had 5 points on 1-5 shooting and Tyrus Thomas had 7 points on 1-6 shooting. Both played terribly tonight.

The Wizards just played all around great team ball tonight, having eight players in double figures. Jamison had 27 points, Caron Butler and Mike James had 14 points, Darius Songaila, Nick Young, and Andray Blatche had 12 points, and Dominic McGuire and JaVale McGee both had 10 points.

When you allow eight players to score in double figures, you are most likely going to lose the game.

Kirk Hinrich had 7 points on a solid 2-5 shooting, and Luol Deng had 4 points on 2-8 shooting.

Anthony Roberson played his first game with the Bulls. He had 0 points on 0-3 shooting.

The Bulls wore black patches to honor Norm Van Lier and Johnny Red Kerr. The Wizards honored Kerr and Van Lier with a moment of silence before the game.

It’s hard to tell what exactly is wrong with the Bulls. Maybe the mix of Barack Obama being present and the deaths of Johnny Red Kerr and Norm Van Lier was just too much for them to handle. Maybe they just don’t have good chemistry after the trade, as they are now 1-3 with the new players in the mix.

But one thing is for sure, when you are playing a 13-44 opponent, and you’re trying to make the playoffs, you have to find a way to win the game. Losing a game like this is inexcusable.

With the loss, the Bulls fall to 26-33 on the season. Luckily, they likely will not be affected in the playof race tonight as Milwaukee looks set to lose in New Orleans tonight.

Bulls Get Presidential

The president of the United States invited the Chicago Bulls to the White House yesterday. Barack Obama has been a long time Bulls fan. Tonight was Barack Obama’s first Wizards game since being elected president. He is the first president to attend a Wizards game since Bill Clinton. Joe Biden, his vice president, attended a Bulls game earlier this year at the United Center. The officials waited to start the game until Obama entered the stadium. Obama ended up in some courtside seats on the edge of the court. He left the game with a few minutes left to standing ovation as the Bulls were amidst in getting blown out.

Chicago Bulls 98 vs. Washington Wizards 86

Friday, January 9th, 2009

The Chicago Bulls defeated the Washington Wizards 98 to 86 at the United Center for their second straight win.

The Wizards scored the first basket of the game, but the Bulls quickly took the lead and never looked back, jumping to an 18 point lead at the end of the first half. The Bulls went cold in the fourth, allowing Washington to get the game back within single digits, but the Bulls easily fended off the Wizards to escape with the win.

Ben Gordon had a decent game. He finished with 22 points and 5 assists. Gordon scored very efficiently, shooting 9-16, and passed the ball well, but he had a lot of mental lapses in tonights game. Gordon had 3 of his 4 turnovers early in the early minutes of the game, making two passes to no one and getting called for an offensive foul.

Gordon’s hot third quarter kept the Wizards from making this into a close game earlier in the game. Gordon went on a tear to end the third quarter, scoring 11 points in the quarter.

Derrick Rose had a solid game, finishing with 8 points and 9 assists. While Rose was poor scoring wise, he did very well passing the ball. Unlike a lot of games, where he just gets his assists from passing to a jumpshooter who hits a contested jumpshot, tonight, Derrick was actually creating great scoring opportunities for his teammates.

Tyrus Thomas continued his streak of great play. Thomas had 16 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in the ball game. Thomas is making smart plays on the offensive end of the ball, which has greatly increased his scoring efficiency. On the defensive end of the ball, it looks like that Tyrus from 2006-2007 is back. Thomas is out there altering a lot of shots, and playing some of the best man defense of his career.

Thomas’ frontcourt counterpart, Drew Gooden, put in another nice game. Drew Gooden scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Bulls did a lot of pick and pop plays with Gooden, and Gooden knocked down the open jumpshots with ease. With other teams constantly double teaming Rose and Gordon with a big man, a big like Gooden, who can nail down jumpshots, is very valuable to this team. When the Bulls get good production from their front court, they are a much more difficult team to beat.

Nick Young shot the ball great. Young scored 28 points on 12-15 shooting. It didn’t matter if it was Rose, Gordon, or Hughes guarding him, he was scoring no matter what. It’s not like he did anything in particular to burn the Bulls guards, he just made his shots. He was the main reason why the Wizards were able to close the lead a little bit, but the Wizards went away from him, and the Bulls quickly pulled away again.

The Wizards struggled in a large part because Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler both struggled. Antawn Jamison had 12 points on 4-12 shooting and Caron Butler had 2 points on 1-8 shooting. When the Wizards only get 14 points on 5-20 shooting from Jamison/Butler, they’re not going to be winning many ball games.

Larry Hughes came into the game chucking, and really hurt the Bulls in the first half, shooting only 2-7. But in the second half, Hughes started to make some of his shots, and really helped the Bulls build their lead back to 20+ points. Hughes finished the game with 17 points.

Joakim Noah was really active when in the game, getting 6 points and 7 rebounds in 22 minutes. Noah’s problem is that he doesn’t have the necessary strength to bang with NBA centers and lacks the athleticism and instincts to be a great shotblocker. When Noah is in the game, he gives up a lot defensively, and for the most part, struggles offensively. Tonight wasn’t really one of those nights given Washington’s lack of quality big men.

Mike James had 11 points for the Wizards.

A win is always good, but the Bulls should be beating a team as bad as the Wizards by more than 12 points. There is no reason that the Bulls should have let Washington creep back into the game.

Andres Nocioni left the game with an injury in the first half, but returned in the second half.

Wizards head coach Ed Tapscott was ejected from the game after screaming at the refs about a carrying violation after the Wizards blew a 2 on 1 fastbreak.

With the win, the Bulls improve to 16-20 on the season.

Chicago Bulls 117 vs. Washington Wizards 110

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

The Chicago Bulls defeated the Washington Wizards tonight at the United Center 117 to 110 in an ugly basketball game.

Ben Gordon had a really nice game for the Bulls. He finished with 21 points on 9-15 shooting, 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block. In the third quarter, Antonio Daniels made a drive to the basket and Ben Gordon met him at the rim and swatted away Daniel’s layup attempt, igniting a Bulls fastbreak. Following the block, Gordon did the Dikembe Mutumbo finger wave in Daniel’s direction. It was one of the greatest blocks in Bulls history.

His backcourt mate, Derrick Rose, also had a nice game. Rose finished the game with 15 points and 8 assists.

The third guard, Larry Hughes, also had a tremendous game. Hughes finished with 24 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals. The most impressive part about Hughes’ game tonight is that he shot 5 of 6 from three point. Hughes has just been playing great basketball as of late. Larry Hughes is not only easily the most talented potential third guard on the Bulls, but also the most effective, as he can play the point guard, shooting guard, and small forward positions, something Kirk Hinrich and Thabo Sefolosha cannot do. With Hughes’ great play, it is pretty clear that there won’t be minutes for Hinrich in the backcourt when he comes back.

Luol Deng put together a nice game for the second night in a row. Deng finished the game with 26 points on 11-19 shooting. He did his usual disappearing act in the fourth quarter, but if the Bulls get three great quarters out of Deng like in 2006-2007, then the Bulls are going to be a tough team to beat with Rose and Gordon’s great fourth quarter play.

Andres Nocioni also had a nice game, although he was bound to have one after about 9 horrific games. Nocioni finished the game with 19 points and 3 assists.

Vinny Del Negro opted to go small most of the game. It is hard to blame Vinny for this, the front court has been abominable all season long. They left Vinny with no choice. Aaron Gray got the start over Joakim Noah, who had a DNP - Coach’s Decision. Tyrus Thomas only played 5 minutes. The front court players who did play were useless for the most part, although Gooden had a solid 12 points and 10 rebounds. The front court defense is still non-existent.

Antawn Jamison had 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Wizards, and Caron Butler added in 27 points.

With the win, the Bulls improve to 9-11 on the season.

Bulls Beat #58 - Gordon’s played last game with Bulls?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Doug Thonus, of Bullsbeat.com released the 58th episode of the Bulls Beat podcast today. This one is all about Ben Gordon and his comments that he has probably played his last games with the Bulls. It is an excellent podcast, and it really puts some well thought out perspective on the entire Gordon situation.

Doug first points out that Gordon hedged on the question. Gordon didn’t specifically come out and say that he played his last game as a Bulls. If you actually go look at the full interview with Ben, he said that it just looks that way, unless the negotiations change.

Doug thinks that it will absolutely stink if Ben Gordon doesn’t return because he is either our best or 2nd best player. He thinks that the argument that the Bulls shouldn’t pay Gordon $10 million a year is absurd, because at $10 million a year you aren’t asking a guy to be a superstar. Doug says he wouldn’t take a player who is making less than $10 million, that doesn’t fall into one of three categories: 1. Is still on his rookie contract and will make big money when he’s eligible for an extension. 2. A player who got significantly better after he signed his contract, such as Caron Butler. 3. A player who took a pay cut to stay with a contender, such as Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.

He thinks that Gordon has sort of become a scapegoat for all of the team’s failures last year. Fans are venting their frustrations calling him short or inconsistent. He thinks it is absurd to think that someone like Jason Kapono could replace Gordon since he has a higher three point %. Doug contests that Gordon has to hit his threes off the dribble and while covered, while Kapono is completely wide open and set on all his threes. Kapono would have a low three point percentage if he had to make his the same way Gordon made his.

Doug thinks that Gordon is getting a raw deal. People are calling Ben a bench player, and using that as their point why Gordon shouldn’t be paid. In reality, Gordon isn’t a bench player, he has been 3rd or better in minutes every year he’s been with the Bulls. He’s a bench player since we elected to add scoring off the bench, not because he’s not good enough to start. Ben Gordon is on the floor in the important situations in games for the Bulls. Fans using this as an argument against Gordon are being intellectually dishonest.

He thinks that Gordon is bluffing. The Bulls won’t take crap back just to do Gordon a favor. They are going to want something really good for Gordon, not something like the 20th pick which they can just buy on draft night. Portland is the one team where Gordon is a good fit and they have the assets to make an attractive offer to the Bulls.

Options for Gordon if he’s not going to take the qualifying offer is to accept the Bulls offer or Europe. Europe screws him because he will still be a restricted free agent. Would be better for Gordon to bite the bullet and take the qualifying offer.

Doug also thinks that fans who think Ben Gordon isn’t worth the money because he can’t get an offer sheet are using a poor argument. The only team with any cap space is Memphis and they have a truckload of guards.

This situation can become nuclear for both the Bulls and Gordon. For Gordon, wanting more money is understandable, since he takes all the important shots and is the one aske to score on triple teams when they have to get points. Thinks if Gordon has another down year, he might only be looking at the MLE, or a little above it, if he can’t get back to that 2006-2007 level. I think personally, this is a little unfair, since Gordon’s efficiency once Skiles was fired was sky high, and he was at 20 PPG for the season before Boylan benched him after the Wallace trade. Also nuclear for the Bulls because if Gordon leaves, they will be flushing one of their best players for nothing.

Gordon is the perfect complement next to a great player, which Derrick Rose should be. Gordon can play great in a shooter, off the ball role while Derrick Rose dominates, but also can step up 20-25 games a year and win them by himself.

Doug thinks those saying we will survive losing our leading scorer, because it happened with Jamal and Eddy are fooling themselves. According to Doug, Jamal Crawford sucks at basketball and Eddy Curry had one good year with the Bulls, and became crap with the Knicks because he never worked on his weaknesses. Neither Eddy or Jamal made consistent positive impacts on games for the Bulls. Ben Gordon on the other hand has consistently positively impacted a game for the Bulls. We have won tons of games because of Ben’s scoring ability. Gordon’s +/- has been great except for last year with the Bulls, when everyone’s was bad. He thinks Ben Gordon, like Elton Brand, could be the one high draft pick we get rid of that comes back to bite us in the butt.

Also, Doug thinks the Bulls offense hasn’t been well suited for Gordon. He thinks we spent too much time doing a useless pick and roll with Ben Wallace in the corner, which exposed Gordon’s flaws. He thinks if Ben goes to another team, he could really improve just by being in a better offense. This has been a complaint of mine. The example I like to use is the 2006-2007 playoffs. In the series against the Heat, the Bulls had Gordon playing at the top of the key, and ran him in pick and rolls with Nocioni. Luol Deng always gets the credit for being the best player in this series, and he did good, but I think Gordon was the most dominant player in this series. Then in the Pistons series, we put Ben Gordon back in the corner, and the Pistons simply pinned him there, making him ineffective.

Doug absolutely does not want to send Gordon to Miami. Gordon, Wade, and Beasley would make too good of a team, and also Shawn Marion, the piece the Heat would have to give up, does nothing for us.

He thinks the Bull should go up around $66 million in their offer to Ben. Thinks the Bulls, when trading Andres Nocioni or Kirk Hinrich, should shed some money to find room to get under the luxury tax. Doug thinks Gordon’s stance is that he knows they are going to make moves after they sign him, and since they are willing to go right up to the luxury tax right now with Ben, he knows they won’t be taking more salary back in those trades, so the Bulls could get under the luxury tax before the tax is calculated, and Gordon can get a larger deal.

Doug thinks that Gordon is full of it, and that Ben Gordon will either take the qualifying offer and if not that, then probably the Bulls long term offer.

Ben Gordon Doesn’t See Himself Being a Bull Next Season

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Ben Gordon is back in Conneticut for Jim Calhoun’s allstar charity game, featuring other NBA players such as Ray Allen, Emeka Okafor, Rudy Gay, and Caron Butler as well as former Chicago Bulls stars, Khalid El-Amin, Donyell Marshall, and Scott Burrell. While in Conneticut, Gordon spoke with the Hartford Courant about his contract situation.

“Right now, honestly, it doesn’t look like it,” Gordon said. “I think a decision is going to be made soon. … I’ve had a great time here. I was fortunate enough to play on a team that made the playoffs; I led the team in scoring three of the four seasons I’ve been here. It’s been a good experience, but we haven’t been able to come to any common ground. It’s just part of the business. You have to do what you have to do sometimes.”

It is unclear what Gordon’s plans are if he isn’t coming back to the Bulls next season. He could be headed to Europe, or to the Phoenix Suns, New Orleans Hornets, New York Knicks, or Miami Heat as part of a sign and trade.
