2009-2010 Season: Warriors End Bulls Win Streak 114-97

Monday, January 18th, 2010

The Chicago Bulls fell to the Golden State Warriors 114-97 in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee game.

This was a bit of an unexpected win from the Warriors given that they were only suiting eight players, three of whom were D-League players. Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry, Corey Maggette, and Andris Biedrins were the only four Warriors’ regulars who played today, and they all played great.

The best player for the Warriors was by far Andris Biedrins, who finished with 9 points, 19 rebounds, and 8 blocks. Biedrins really bothered the Bulls with his length, and was a big part in shutting down the Bulls’ offense in the paint. The only knock on Biedrins today was his poor free throw shooting, where he shot 1-7. All of his free throws were line drives at the hoop, that bricked off the front of the rim. But Biedrins more than made up for the poor free throw shooting with his shot blocking and shot altering ability. Biedrins really set the tone defensively for the Warriors, who did a good job contesting the Bulls’ shots, and also getting set for charges, which also helped to shutdown the Bulls penetration game.

The Warriors got great production from Corey Maggette, who scored 32 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished 5 assists. Maggette shot 11-14, and was automatic from mid range shots in which he just caught the ball, measured up, and shot it.

The rookie Stephen Curry played great today as well, finishing with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists. Curry shot the ball well, going 5-8 from three, hit some nice floaters, and did a nice job defensively on Derrick Rose.

Monta Ellis led the Warriors in scoring with 36 points, but he did that very inefficiently, taking 39 shots to get those 36 points. He also had 8 assists in the game.

John Salmons finished with 25 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. He did a good job of keeping the Bulls in the game in the third quarter, but was very quiet in the fourth quarter.

Luol Deng played well, finishing with 20 points on 7-16 shooting, and Derrick Rose was solid, scoring 19 points.

Jannero Pargo scored 12 points for the Bulls, but he scored 5 of it in garbage time. When the game mattered, Pargo was hurting the Bulls by taking some really bad shots.

Biedrins really bothered Joakim Noah and Tyrus Thomas. Noah only scored 4 points on 2-10 shooting, and Thomas scored 4 points on 2-7 shooting. Neither knew how to score around Biedrins’ long arms. Both rebounded well, as Noah finished with 16 rebounds, and Thomas had 9 rebounds in 19 minutes before fouling out.

Taj Gibson played well today, finishing with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

The Bulls were without Kirk Hinrich, who was suffering a bout with the flu.

With the loss, the Bulls fall to 18-21 on the season.

Chicago Bulls 110 Golden State Warriors 88

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

The Chicago Bulls defeated the Golden State Warriors 110 to 88 with some exciting, high scoring basketball tonight at the United Center.

The Bulls fell down big pretty early on, but Vinny subbed in Brad Miller and Kirk Hinrich, and that pair brought stability to the lineup, and the Bulls quickly fought their way back into the game. Brad Miller had an impressive 19 points on 7-9 shooting off the bench and Kirk Hinrich had a nice 13 points 6 assist effort.

John Salmons led the charge tonight with 23 points on an efficient 7-14 shooting along with 9 rebounds. He is just playing great. He makes some nice drives to the basket, which he usually finishes with a reverse, double clutch layup. He is also a shot maker. The offense is much improved with Salmons in the starting spot than with Deng, for two reasons. First, Salmons is a much more efficient scorer than Deng. Second, Salmons is less of a blackhole than Deng. Salmons will take shots when he has them there. Deng tries to force up some bad shot everytime he has the ball. Salmons really should be the starting small forward for the remainder of the season.

Joakim Noah was great as well tonight. He finished with 14 points, 17 rebounds, and 4 blocks. He was just all over the place tonight, making good defensive plays and rebounding the basketball. Just an all around great game from Noah.

Ben Gordon had another off night. He finished with 15 points on 6-15 shooting. The shots just weren’t falling for Ben tonight. You could tell it was a rough shot by the point blank layup he missed, as well as the 2 misses from the free throw line. The problem with Ben right now is that he’s taking some pretty bad shots. That’s not to say that he has bad shot selection, but his form is broken right now. He is severely leaning into a lot of his shots. He has to go straight up. On the three point attempt that he missed, he pumped, hesitated, then leaned in. On the three point shot he made, he just went straight up, and took a well balanced shot. If Ben gets back to taking square, well balanced shots, he will probably begin to see more of them go in again.

Derrick Rose had a so so game, scoring 14 points and passing for 6 assists. He didn’t seem to really impact the game in any great way, he was just sort of out there, making a nice play from time to time.

Tyrus Thomas had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Thomas was kind of checked out of this game mentally. Early in the game, Anthony Randolph had a vicious block on Thomas, that sent Thomas to the floor, writhing in pain. After that, Thomas really didn’t have it mentally tonight, which is understandable.

Stephen Jackson led the Warriors in scoring with 19 points. Corey Maggette had 14 points and Jamal Crawford and C.J. Watson had 11 points each.

The Warriors just aren’t a good basketball team. They chuck up a lot of bad shots and hardly play any defense. It’s easy to see why they have the record that they do. Still, the Bull have been losing to some teams that they’re better than, so beating a bad team is not something that should be taken for granted.

With the win, the Bulls improve to 28-34 on the season. Around the league tonight, the Bucks fell to the Cavs 91 to 73 and the Nets fell to the Celtics 115 to 111. The Bulls are now tied with the Bucks record wise for the eighth seed in the East. The Bucks at 29-35 have one more win, but also one more loss than the Bulls.

Chicago Bulls at Golden State Warriors Recap

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

The Chicago Bulls defeated the Golden State Warriors 115 to 110 yesterday evening.

The Bulls were led by rookie Derrick Rose, who finished the game with 25 points and 5 assists. Rose had a horrible first half, but made up for it with his excellent second half, scoring 23 points and getting the Bulls the win. Rose did most of his damage with his jumpshot, although he did have a very nice dunk too in which he split the defense to get the dunk.

Larry Hughes had a good night, scoring 26 points. When Larry Hughes is making his shots, he is pretty good. Unfortunately, Larry Hughes has a long history of missing his shots, so Bulls’ fans shouldn’t get too excited out of this performance, as Hughes will likely return to his profession as a brick layer in the near future.

Thabo Sefolsoha got the start at power forward tonight and put together a nice game. He had 12 points 6 rebounds and 4 assists. This is a problem that the Bulls have with Sefolosha. He is a horrible guard, but he’s pretty good at the forward spots. Do the Bulls just let him go, or make room by trading one of their small forwards to create minutes for Thabo at the backup small forward spot?

Ben Gordon had another tough shooting night. Gordon scored 13 points on 6-15 shooting and was 1-7 from three point land. Gordon manufactured most of his offense on some nice drives to the basket. I wouldn’t be too concerned about Ben Gordon. He is taking good shots, his moves look nice, it’s just a matter of the shots not going in. Once Ben Gordon snaps out of this shooting slump he will be deadly once again.

The Bulls got a big game out of Drew Gooden tonight. Gooden had 18 points and 16 rebounds. When the Bulls get a good game out of one of their bigs, they can afford to have bad shooting nights out of a player like Gordon.

Lindsey Hunter was also solid off the bench scoring 10 points.

Andris Biedrins had 23 points 10 rebounds for the Warriors. Jackson and Maggette carried the scoring load for the Warriors. Jackson had 32 points and Maggette had 24 points.

The Bulls stopped Anthony Morrow’s hot streak, limiting him to 7 points on 2-9 shooting.

The Bulls next game is Sunday against Denver.
