Bulls Win Two In A Row Out West

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

The Bulls started off their West Coast road trip with two losses to the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Clippers. The Bulls followed that up with wins over the Phoenix Suns and the Houston Rockets.

The Bulls beat the Phoenix Suns 115-104. The Bulls were led by Derrick Rose, who had one of his best games of the season, scoring 31 points on 15-21 shooting. Luol Deng gave the Bulls 23 points, Joakim Noah 19 points, and 14 a piece for Kirk Hinrich and John Salmons. Amare Stoudemire finished with 23 points and Steve Nash struggled, finishing with only 8 points and 7 assists.

In their 104-97 win over the Houston Rockets, the Bulls got a big night out of Brad Miller, who finished with 25 points and 5 rebounds in only 25 minutes of play. Brad Miller was starting in place of Joakim Noah, who is suffering plantar fascitis. Taj Gibson had a big double double, finishing with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Derrick Rose played well again, finishing with 20 points. Aaron Brooks and Luis Scola had 20 points a piece for the Rockets, and Carl Landry scored 22 points off the bench.

With Taj Gibson continuing to play well while Tyrus Thomas struggles, it is hard to make a good case for Tyrus Thomas starting over Taj Gibson anymore. Thomas will be gone at the end of the season, and the Bulls are unlikely to feel the loss of him at all. If Taj Gibson is the starting power forward next season, then the Bulls might feel the loss of Thomas some, but their cap space should be used to sign a big man, not a shooting guard (unless you are getting that superstar player named Dwyane Wade).

It is also good to see Derrick Rose put up good game after good game. He has really turned the corner as a player.

Also, it is great to see the Bulls get two road wins against tough opponents. This was a part of the schedule that could have really derailed the Bulls season some. Now, it looks like the Bulls will keep a hold of their playoff position coming out of this trip, and will have a chance to move up in the playoff standings when they get back to an easier chunk of the schedule. The Suns are 26-19 on the season, and the Rockets are 24-19, so these are two wins that really shouldn’t have been expected out of the Bulls.

The Bulls have three more games left on this road trip, against the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, and New Orleans Hornets. Worst case scenario is that the Bulls are 5 games under .500 coming out of the road trip, leaving them plenty of time to get back to .500 and make their claim for the playoffs as the schedule gets easier.

Chicago Bulls 105 vs. Houston Rockets 102

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

The Chicago Bulls overcame some bad coaching by Vinny Del Negro with some clutch scoring by Derrick Rose and Ben Gordon to get a 105 to 102 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Derrick Rose was just fantastic tonight, and really was the leading force in getting the Bulls the victory. He had a monstrous 16 points in the fourth quarter, more than the entire Houston Rockets team. With 32 seconds left, Rose jack knifed for a fall away floater to give the Bulls a 104 to 102 lead.

After stopping some Ron Artest three point attempts, John Salmons made 1 of 2 free throws to give the Bulls a 105 to 102 lead. The Bulls then snuffed out Ron Artest again to escape with the victory.

The lineup of Derrick Rose, Ben Gordon, John Salmons, Joakim Noah, and Brad Miller got stop after stop to allow the Bulls to get back into the game and eventually grab the victory. The Bulls outscored the Rockets 34 to 14 in the fourth quarter.

In total, Derrick Rose had a tantalizing 22 points, 7 assists, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. He was great tonight. When he is going with this type of aggressiveness, he is hard to stop, and truly looks like a superstar.

Ben Gordon was Rose’s partner in crime in the fourth. Gordon scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including a pretty jumpshot over Yao Ming that tied the game at 102.

Vinny Del Negro pulled Ben Gordon less than 3 minutes into the third quarter. Vinny needs to learn that you need to keep your best players on the court. Rose, Gordon, those guys will make mistakes from time to time, but you have to let them play through their mistakes, as those are the two guys most likely to lead you to victory. And it’s not like Gordon was having a bad game. Almost all of his misses at that points were on some drives to the basket where Gordon attacked Yao, and he was playing some pretty tough defense. With Gordon on the bench, the Rockets outscored the Bulls 30 to 16 in the third quarter.

But Del Negro’s limitations are definitely in the X’s and O’s. The Bulls are playing Boylan Ball again. That is glorified pick up ball. They’re running very few offensive sets for most of the game and just looking for their perimeter players to create some opportunities.

Yao Ming really wasn’t that impressive tonight, only finishing with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks. He didn’t really take over on the offensive end tonight at all and didn’t really affect Rose all that much in the paint in the fourth quarter. Yao also was having some conditioning problems. After solid stretches of minutes, he could be seen lumbering down the court, and made into an ineffective player by his fatigue.

Ron Artest was great tonight, scoring 32 points and stealing the ball 3 times. He was an impressive 6-12 from three point land, with most of his misses on the last two Rocket possessions of the game. The Bulls left the Rockets open for too many threes tonight. They need to double team guys like Luis Scola less, and stay on the three point shooters.

The Bulls young front court was impressive tonight. Joakim Noah had 10 points, 15 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Tyrus Thomas added in 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks. What was really nice about these two is that they were attacking the rim, going for dunks, getting the Bulls the easy two points. Tyrus Thomas was also making his jumpers tonight.

The two former Kings were solid tonight. Brad Miller had 11 points and 4 assists and John Salmons added in 12 points and 6 rebounds.

Luis Scola had 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Bulls had a lot of difficulty guarding him, despite using the double team on him quite often.

Von Wafer had 11 points and Kyle Lowry had 10 points.

Kirk Hinrich had an ineffective 7 points on 3-9 shooting. Hinrich’s poor play was a large reason for the Rockets big third quarter.

Luol Deng and Tim Thomas both left the game with injuries.

The Bulls again wore black patches to honor Johnny Red Kerr and Norm Van Lier. Prior to the game, the Bulls honored them with a video montage and a moment of silence.

The Bulls have entered this weird phase, where they’re beating some good teams (Denver, Orlando, Houston) but losing to some really bad teams (Indiana, Washington).

With the win, the Bulls improve to 27-33 on the season. Tonight was a big win as the Bucks got the win in Washington. By winning, the Bulls remaing just 1 game behind Milwaukee for that 8th seed in the Eastern Conference.

Houston Rockets 107 vs. Chicago Bulls 100

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

The Chicago Bulls failed to extend their three game winning streak to four in Houston tonight, losing 107 to 100 to the Houston Rockets.

This loss falls squarely on Vinny Del Negro and some weird coaching decisions. The biggest blunder was not bringing Aaron Gray to match up with Yao Ming after Joakim Noah fouled in. Instead, Vinny left a front court of Tyrus Thomas and Andres Nocioni in the game, which resulted in Yao Ming posting up Andres Nocioni on a few posessions. Vinny dared Houston to go inside to Yao Ming and Houston did, with great results.

The second blunder was leaving Kirk Hinrich in over Ben Gordon for more than half of the fourth quarter. This is just a matter of Vinny not knowing his own team. Kirk Hinrich has rarely done anything in the fourth quarter during his career. He was one of the worst clutch players in the NBA last year, while Gordon was one of the best. Sure, Ben was having a poor game, but time and time again, the Bulls had Ben Gordon explode in the fourth quarter after a poor first three quarters. (Pretty much every game during his rookie year, for example).

And Ben Gordon did just that when he actually did get into the game, scoring 8 points in a 1 minute 22 second stretch. It was good that the Bulls were able to close the gap some, even though they ultimately came up short. A 7 point loss is a lot better than the blowout that the Bulls were on course to suffer.

For Gordon, the game was a story of spurts. Ben Gordon came into the game shooting cold…had a hot streak to end the second quarter and to start the third quarter. Missed a few shots on some drives to the basket, then came back in late in the fourth and got hot again. Gordon finished with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Not too great of a night for him. He needs to be able to score more consistently throughout the course of the game.

Luol Deng was absolutely outstanding. He was scoring by making jumpshots and driving to the basket. Deng shot 8 free throws tonight. Deng finished with 28 points and 6 rebounds. Since coming back from injury, Deng has looked very aggressive. if Deng continues to play like he has been as of late, he will be doing plenty to fulfill his contract.

The Rockets front court absolutely destroyed the Bulls. Yao Ming had 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks. The Bulls were completely overmatched by Yao’s size the entire night, although it was nice to see the Bulls attack Yao early in the game, and draw some early fouls on Yao. Luis Scola had 13 points and 18 rebounds. He gave the Bulls trouble on the boards.

The Bulls front court didn’t do terrible, they’re just overmatched talent and size wise. Tyrus Thomas had a really nice game, finishing with 14 points 13 rebounds 4 assists and 3 blocks. He was very active tonight, and gave the Bulls great help defense. Aaron Gray and Joakim Noah didn’t fare very well, but they were guarding Yao Ming for most of the game, and they’re just overmatched size and talent wise.

Derrick Rose had a nice little 12 points 7 assists and 7 rebounds game. Rose is really having difficulty scoring the ball efficiently as a result of his lack of three point shot and inability to get to the free throw line. Once again tonight, Rose had a sub-50 TS% night. He will have to evolve his offensive game in order to become the efficient scorer that the Bulls need.

Tracy McGrady had 16 points and 6 assists for the Rockets. Ron Artest had 10 points and 6 assists.

Kirk Hinrich had 10 points and 4 assists. He really was a non-factor. There is a big drop off in ball movement when Hinrich is in the game and Rose is not.

Andres Nocioni had 11 points on 4-9 shooting, but did not have a good game. As usual, Nocioni played little defense and played stupidly. One such instance was when Nocioni committed a foul as Houston was getting set to call a timeout.

Aaron Brooks exploded for 18 points off the bench. The Bulls left him open for three too often.

With this loss, the Chicago Bulls drop to 21-28 on the season.

In past years, Rookies and Sophomores wore their regular team jerseys during the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam. The winning design was created by 18-year-old Tim Ahmed from East Meadow, Long Island. Ahmed attended East Meadow High School and is currently a first-year student at Baruch College in Manhattan.

In last year’s T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam, Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson earned Most Valuable Player honors, making 11 three-pointers en route to a game-high 33 points, as the Sophomores cruised to a 136-109 victory. Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay added 22 points and Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Farmar tallied 17 points and 11 assists. Durant, then of the Seattle SuperSonics, led the Rookies with 23 points.

The contest began its current format pitting the Rookies against the Sophomores in 2000 and the Sophomores hold a 7-2 advantage over the first-year players. The game will be played in two 20-minute halves. Individual foul totals will be kept, but a player cannot foul out. A team will be in the penalty situation after 10 team fouls or after the second foul in the final two minutes of each half. In the event of a tie game, there will be a two-minute overtime to determine the winner. The clock will stop after each successful field goal in the last minute of each half.

T-Mobile will provide basketball fans with the opportunity to have their vote count toward selecting the MVP of the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam by voting on NBA.com or via SMS on mobile phones during the second half of the game.

Nocioni Wins Bronze, but Is He Golden For the Bulls?

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Andres Nocioni and Argentina defeated Lithuania 87-75 early this morning in the bronze medal game. Argentina took the lead early on and never gave it up. Argentina was ahead by over 20 points, but faltered a little at the end after Luis Scola fouled out. Argentina was without Manu Ginobili for the entire game due to an aggravation of an ankle injury from the NBA season. Andres Nocioni finished the game with 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals.

I took the time to take a look at Andres Nocioni one more time this summer, in the competitive environment of a medal game, to take a look at how he might fit with the Bulls this coming year. For Nocioni, the game was a story of two halves.

Nocioni looked a little lackluster in the first half. On multiple occasions, Nocioni would lean in when jumping to contest a three point shot, making contact with the man. On one of the occasions, the referees let it slide, however, on the other, Nocioni was called for a foul, and Siskauskus had an and one.

Nocioni also showed that he still makes some poor judgments. During one sequence, he airballed a wide open three in the corner. He followed this up by driving recklessly towards the basket and putting up a right handed floater, which he airballed.

During the first half, one thing that stuck out was that Nocioni was often guarding no one. He would float towards the paint, to get into position to rebound. Nocioni still ferociously tears down rebounds, so if he is in the right position, he will usually secure the rebound for you.

In the second half, a completely different Nocioni showed up. This Nocioni showed real hustle and actually played defense. Nocioni played Bruce Bowen style, lock down defense throughout the second half. It was beautiful to watch as Nocioni caused Lithuania to turnover the ball with his ferocious defense. During one play, Nocioni picked his man at the top of the key and dribbled in for the breakaway dunk. On the next play, Nocioni broke up a pass to his man on the wing, popped up the ball, then chased it down and went in to lay the ball in for the easy score. On another sequence, Nocioni dove on the floor knocking the ball away, starting a pinball sequence. Argentina ended up with the ball and scored.

Throughout the game, Argentina played Nocioni in the weakside corner. Nocioni wasn’t expected to create any offense, and just played off Pigrioni, Scola, and Delfino. Nocioni moved perfectly without the ball, moving into great positions to score off the dribble penetration of Pigrioni and Delfino.

One especially great move by Nocioni came on a give and go. Nocioni handed the ball off to Scola in the corner and then did a step back move. Scola gave Nocioni the ball back, and Nocioni nailed the jumper.

So how exactly does Nocioni fit with this year’s Bulls team? He should fit in very well with his ability to play off the dribble penetration and set ups of others. Nocioni is probably the 2nd most dynamic player on the Bulls, behind only Ben Gordon, in terms of getting you a win. Nocioni has the ability to be a very good player on both sides of the ball, he just chooses not to.

The key with Nocioni is to reel him in. If the new coaching staff can call Nocioni out when he is dogging it, and getting him to play hard every minute he is on the court, he could have a huge impact for the Bulls this year. The problem with Nocioni is he is a lazy player. However, Nocioni is also a talented player, one of the most talented players on the Bulls.

The Bulls should wait and see which Nocioni the new coaching staff is able to produce. If it is the Nocioni from the first half, who was dogging it the entire time, and not playing defense, then the Bulls would be wise to trade him, either as part of a package deal or for an expiring contract. However, if the new coaching staff is able to get that Nocioni that is playing hard, and actually playing defense, that player is a keeper. That Nocioni is golden to the Bulls and can help win a championship.

Andres Nocioni and Argentina Win Diamond Ball

Friday, August 1st, 2008

The Argentina national team won FIBA’s diamond ball after defeating Australia today in the finals. Here is how it went down and how Andres Nocioni did in the games.

  • Argentina starts off by defeating Iran in their first preliminary game, 81-71. Andres Nocioni scored 5 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and had 2 steals.
  • In their second preliminary game, against a Serbia team featuring Nenad Krstic, Argentina won 75-60. Andres Nocioni had 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 block.
  • In the finals, Argentina came from behind, powerered by Luis Scola’s 28 second half points (32 points total), to defeat Australia 95-91. Argentina held Andrew Bogut down to only 4 points and 2 rebounds. Andres Nocioni scored 20 points, had 8 rebounds, and 1 block.

Overall, in Argentina’s three tournament games, Nocioni averaged 13.3 PTS 6.7 REBS. Nocioni scored the ball efficiently, recording an extraordinary 80.9 TS%. Nocioni shot 57.9 FG% overall, 53.8% from three, and 84.6% from the free throw line.

The Argentina national team competed in the 2008 FIBA Diamond Ball Tournament in Nanjing, China in preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
