2009-2010 Season: Warriors End Bulls Win Streak 114-97

Monday, January 18th, 2010

The Chicago Bulls fell to the Golden State Warriors 114-97 in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee game.

This was a bit of an unexpected win from the Warriors given that they were only suiting eight players, three of whom were D-League players. Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry, Corey Maggette, and Andris Biedrins were the only four Warriors’ regulars who played today, and they all played great.

The best player for the Warriors was by far Andris Biedrins, who finished with 9 points, 19 rebounds, and 8 blocks. Biedrins really bothered the Bulls with his length, and was a big part in shutting down the Bulls’ offense in the paint. The only knock on Biedrins today was his poor free throw shooting, where he shot 1-7. All of his free throws were line drives at the hoop, that bricked off the front of the rim. But Biedrins more than made up for the poor free throw shooting with his shot blocking and shot altering ability. Biedrins really set the tone defensively for the Warriors, who did a good job contesting the Bulls’ shots, and also getting set for charges, which also helped to shutdown the Bulls penetration game.

The Warriors got great production from Corey Maggette, who scored 32 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished 5 assists. Maggette shot 11-14, and was automatic from mid range shots in which he just caught the ball, measured up, and shot it.

The rookie Stephen Curry played great today as well, finishing with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists. Curry shot the ball well, going 5-8 from three, hit some nice floaters, and did a nice job defensively on Derrick Rose.

Monta Ellis led the Warriors in scoring with 36 points, but he did that very inefficiently, taking 39 shots to get those 36 points. He also had 8 assists in the game.

John Salmons finished with 25 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. He did a good job of keeping the Bulls in the game in the third quarter, but was very quiet in the fourth quarter.

Luol Deng played well, finishing with 20 points on 7-16 shooting, and Derrick Rose was solid, scoring 19 points.

Jannero Pargo scored 12 points for the Bulls, but he scored 5 of it in garbage time. When the game mattered, Pargo was hurting the Bulls by taking some really bad shots.

Biedrins really bothered Joakim Noah and Tyrus Thomas. Noah only scored 4 points on 2-10 shooting, and Thomas scored 4 points on 2-7 shooting. Neither knew how to score around Biedrins’ long arms. Both rebounded well, as Noah finished with 16 rebounds, and Thomas had 9 rebounds in 19 minutes before fouling out.

Taj Gibson played well today, finishing with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

The Bulls were without Kirk Hinrich, who was suffering a bout with the flu.

With the loss, the Bulls fall to 18-21 on the season.

How Much Should the Bulls Pay Gordon?

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

The Chicago Bulls are currently offering Ben Gordon a $59 million over 6 year deal. Ben Gordon has yet to accept the offer.

But how much is Ben Gordon actually worth? I have attempted here to determine his worth by comparing him to the other restricted free agents and would be restricted free agents who accepted extensions last summer, based on statistics, size, and winning. Statistics account for approximately 82% of determining the contract value, and size and winning account for approximately 9% each.

The statistics used in determining the players value are PPG, RPG, APG, TS%, SPG, BPG, FTA, O-Rtg, and D-Rtg. The players combined past 2 seasons were the numbers used.

The amount of a winner that a player is, is determined by total wins, playoff appearances, playoff wins, and playoff series wins. Devin Harris is first in winning, Ben Gordon second, Luol Deng third and Al Jefferson is 2nd to last, and Emeka Okafor is last.

In terms of size, the centers get the biggest benefit, followed by the power forwards, then small forwards, than normal sized shooting guards, then point guards, then small shooting guards. Dwight Howard is ranked first in size, while Ben Gordon is ranked last.

The players are ranked in each category, and then they each have an overall rank that is calculated from each individual category rank.

I have extrapolated the total contract value of guys on five years deal to what they would be worth on a six year deal. The guys ranked in terms of total contract value below. Ben Gordon has been assigned the average value below for the guys that have already signed their new deals.

1. Dwight Howard - $106 million
2. Al Jefferson - $82 million
3. Andre Iguodala - $80 million
4. Josh Smith - $73 million
5. Luol Deng - $71 million
6. Emeka Okafor - $70 million
7. Ben Gordon - $70 million
8. Kevin Martin - $69 million
9. Monta Ellis - $66 million
10. Andris Biedrins - $63 million
11. Devin Harris - $53 million
12. Jameer Nelson - $38 million

Now, the players are ranked in their determined order based on their stats, winning, and size.

1. Dwight Howard - 4.36
2. Andre Iguodala - 5.45
3. Luol Deng - 6.18
4. Josh Smith - 6.18
5. Kevin Martin - 6.18
6. Andris Biedrins - 6.55
7. Monta Ellis - 6.64
8. Devin Harris - 6.73
9. Emeka Okafor - 7
10. Al Jefferson - 7.27
11. Ben Gordon - 7.54
12. Jameer Nelson - 8.91

So if we are to put these numbers on a normal curve, these are the contract values of the players:

1. Dwight Howard - $106 million
2. Andre Iguodala - $88 million
3. Luol Deng - $76 million
4. Josh Smith - $76 million
5. Kevin Martin - $76 million
6. Andris Biedrins - $71 million
7. Monta Ellis - $69 million
8. Devin Harris - $68 million
9. Emeka Okafor - $64 million
10. Al Jefferson - $60 million
11. Ben Gordon - $56 million
12. Jameer Nelson - $38 million

So based on this, Ben Gordon is worth $56 million. However, people should not take this to mean that the Bulls are offering too much with the $59 million offer. If you account Ben Gordon being a legit first or second option, while players such as Andris Biedrins and Devin Harris cannot be categorized as such, one would think that Gordon should get a bit of a pay bump for that, while Biedrins and Harris should have their pay brought down a bit, as Gordon is more responsible for the Bulls success than Harris was for the Mavericks. Therefore, the Bulls $59 million offer for Ben Gordon seems fair based on what the players have done in their careers and their role.

Ben Gordon should absolutely continue holding out (hopefully only to the Great Britain deadline) to see if he can get a few more million from the Bulls. But at the end of the day (in this case, negotiating cycle), Gordon should accept the Bulls $59 million offer, as it is a fair offer.

However, Gordon wouldn’t be crazy if he took the qualifying offer. The Bulls new focus towards a faster paced offense and the addition of Derrick Rose, should help boost Gordon’s scoring and passing numbers. In addition, the free agent market will be favorable to Gordon next year.

Still, the Bulls are making a very fair offer to Gordon. Gordon’s best course of action is to continue to hold out and fight for more money to see how much more he can get out of the Bulls, with it already determined in his mind that he will take the Bulls $59 million offer if that is the highest they are willing to go.

Market Set For Ben Gordon

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

The Golden St. Warriors have done the Bulls a favor in helping to set Gordon’s market value. The Warriors agreed to terms to resign their restricted free agent, Monta Ellis, to a 6 year deal worth $66 million according to the Contra Costa Times.

Here is a quick comparison of the stats of Ben Gordon and Monta Ellis.

Ben Gordon

  • 2007-2008: 18.6 PPG 3.1 RPG 3.0 APG 43.4 FG% 41.0 FT% 55.8 TS%
  • 2006-2007: 21.4 PPG 3.1 RPG 3.6 APG 45.5 FG% 41.3 FT% 57.2 TS%

Monta Ellis

  • 2007-2008: 20.2 PPG 5.0 RPG 4.1 APG 53.1 FG% 23.1 3PT% 58.0 TS%
  • 2006-2007: 16.5 PPG 3.2 RPG 4.9 APG 47.5 FG% 27.3 3PT% 54.5 TS%

Gordon’s scoring numbers are a little bit less than Ellis’ as the result of playing 6 more minutes per a game than Gordon. Ellis was not restricted in minutes as he was a starter and Gordon was restricted by the Bulls coaching staff to a bench role for the majority of the year. Ellis’ rebounding and assist numbers are also inflated over Gordon’s because the Warriors played at a 6% faster pace than the Bulls. Combining the pace and minutes they played together, Ellis had 23% more opportunities than Gordon to accumulate stats.

Statistically speaking, Ellis played better than Gordon this past year by a little bit, but in the past 2 years Gordon has played statistically better than Ellis. It also has to be taken into account that Ellis did what he did seeing a lot less defensive pressure than Gordon did. Overall in their careers, Gordon has experienced more team success than Ellis.

In a July 9th interview with Chuck Swirsky, John Paxson said that he hoped that the market would dictate the value of these guys. This signing by the Warriors should dictate Gordon’s value. Paxson cannot offer Gordon much less than Ellis, as he would not have any credibility in giving Gordon a fair offer.

The signing of Monta Ellis should set Gordon’s value within the $60 million to $70 million range. This offer should act as a catalyst in the Gordon negotiations, so hopefully something can get done soon.
