2009 Las Vegas Summer League: Golden State Warriors 95 vs. Chicago Bulls 83

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

The Chicago Bulls fell to the Golden State Warriors 95 to 83 in their first contest in the 2009 Las Vegas Summer League.

The Bulls fell behind early, as Anthony Randolph poured in 16 points in the first quarter. The Bulls would take control of the game in the second quarter, making it a one point game at half time, 46-45 in favor of the Warriors.

The Bulls took the lead, 63-62 with 3:45 remaining in the third quarter on a James Johnson jumpshot, but it was all Golden State from there.

The story of today’s game was Anthony Randolph of the Warriors, who finished the game with 42 points and 3 blocks. The 42 points tied a Las Vegas Summer League record. Randolph now joins Marcus Banks and Von Wafer for having the most points in a Las Vegas Summer League game. Randolph, with his combination of length and athleticism was a tough cover for the Bulls, forcing the Bulls to foul often, as Randolph went to the free throw line 21 times.

James Johnson was impressive in his Bulls debut, scoring 21 points on 9-13 shooting and grabbing 8 rebounds. There isn’t much that James Johnson can’t do on the offensive end, he is a very skilled player. Johnson was shooting the ball well, even hitting a three point shot near the end of the second quarter. Johnson had another three in the fourth quarter that just rimmed out.

Johnson handled the ball very well. There aren’t many players, if any in the NBA, who can handle the ball like he can. He handled the ball for the Bulls often in the half court, but also in the full court, where he led multiple Bulls’ fastbreaks, many of which were successful. He also showed the ability in the half court to take his man off the dribble, and finish off his dribble drive move.

The discerning part of Johnson’s performance tonight was his effort defensively and on the glass. His defense was subpar, and he didn’t show much effort on the glass, lazily going after rebounds, rather than viciously attacking the boards.

Taj Gibson was the opposite of Johnson defensively and on the glass. Gibson was in there fighting for every rebound. Gibson’s motor is excellent, and has the length to be a good rebounder. He looked as long as advertised in pre-draft measurements out there on the court.

Gibson finished the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He showed an ability to get out and run the court, which should be a good fit when he’s out there playing with Derrick Rose in the regular season.

The discerning part about Gibson’s game tonight was his 9 personal fouls. A lot of these fouls were on attempted blocks by Gibson. Gibson needs to learn to go straight up with his arm when attempting to block a shot. Not only will he avoid the foul, but he will get more reach, which should lead to more blocks.

Johnson and Gibson shared one really impressive tag team play in the second quarter. Jamal Sampson went up for a shot on the left block, and Johnson and Gibson simultaneously blocked the shot.

James Augustine scored 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in just 24 minutes. Augustine hit some jumpshots, and put in a lot of easy shots in the paint set up by his teammates.

Stephen Curry had a tough game, scoring 10 points on 3-15 shooting, but he did have 8 assists and 5 rebounds. Curry looked like a solid point guard, but doesn’t appear to have the skills to be an elite point guard if he isn’t scoring in bunches.

Anthony Morrow and Joe Ingles both put in 10 points for the Warriors as well.

Demarcus Nelson had a solid 14 point, 6 assist, 5 rebound game, while Anthony Roberson put on a brick fest, scoring 11 points, but shooting 3-13 from the field.

Closing Comments

A solid start to summer league for the Bulls. Yes, it was a loss, but in summer league, how you’re prized young players perform is more important than the game result. Tonight, both James Johnson and Taj Gibson showed exactly why the Bulls drafted them, and put on performances that should have Bulls’ fans excited about both players’ futures with the team.

Go Bulls!

Joakim Noah on ESPN’s First Take Recap

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Joakim Noah appeared on ESPN’s First Take on Friday, to discuss his 2008 mishaps and his view on the Bulls new coach, Vinny Del Negro.

Noah maintained throughout the interview that he feels blessed and fortunate to be in the situation he is currently in. He said he wouldn’t trade in anything that happened to him in the past year (suspension for yelling at Ron Adams and marijuana arrest), because he feels blessed to be in the position because he thinks it will make him grow as a erson by allowing him to learn from his mistakes.

He thinks that the suspension handed out to him by his teammates was blown out of proportion by the media. He stated that him and Ben Wallace never got in a fight and that he is very close with his teammates.

Noah is really excited about Vinny Del Negro being the new coach, as he knows Vinny from when Phoenix was scouting him during the draft process. He thinks the Bulls are lucky to be able to get the #1 pick and Derrick Rose and Noah is just looking forward to winning.

Nate Robinson also appeared with Noah on this segment. Ron Artest was supposed to appear on the segment, but he ended up skipping it, even though he was in the studios, because according to Robinson, he was at the candy machine. The trio of Robinson, Noah, and Artest was also due to do a chat on ESPN.com, but none of them showed up for the chat.

Bulls fans will probably come away from this interview thinking that Joakim Noah just doesn’t get it and that he has not learned from his mistakes at all, or even considers them mistakes. It is also alarming that Noah is hanging out with a looney in Ron Artest. If he continues to hang out with questionable people he will be continue to be involved in questionable behavior. The Bulls are already unhappy with Noah showing up to Summer League out of shape.

If Noah’s no show for the ESPN.com chat is any indication, Noah will likely continue his routine of being a no show at Bulls practices.

The interview can be listened to at ESPN.com.

Report: Bulls to go to Sin City

Monday, July 21st, 2008

The Chicago Bulls will be participants in the Las Vegas Summer League next summer. The Las Vegas Summer League is the Summer League officially sponsored by the NBA. All Las Vegas Summer League games are streamed online and some are played on NBA TV. The Bulls have been participants in the Orlando Summer League the past three years.

This could be bad news for those Bulls fans who are fans of Daunte and Galante, the announcers of the Orlando Summer League. Although it is a possibility that the Bulls participate in both summer leagues. In 2007, the Bulls participated in both the Orlando Summer League and the Rocky Mountain Revue. If the summer league scheduling is the same as this year, the Las Vegas Summer League will begin after the completion of the Orlando Summer League.

Chuck Swirsky Interview With Derrick Rose About Knee Recap

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Chuck Swirsky caught up with Derrick Rose after their Wednesday’s summer league game to find out why the Bulls chose to sit him out.

Derrick said that his knee is fine and that he could have played today, but they sat him out for some strange reason. The Bulls wanted to take precautions on his knee.

He felt that watching the game was boring because he really wanted to be out there playing. While watching he analyzes the game as a player. He says players analyze the plays, while fans analyze the players. While on the bench, he thinks about what he would have done in certain situations.

Derrick really enjoys the atmosphere of the Orlando Summer League, and finds the competition to be great. He says that as long as he is playin basketball he’s not worried about anything else.

Chuck Swirsky Post Game Interview With JamesOn Curry Recap

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Chuck Swirsky caught up with JamesOn Curry after the Bulls summer league game on Wednesday.

After three games, Curry thinks the summer league is going well because they are gaining chemistry and learning each others games. He thinks that they are doing better effort wise, moving the ball more, having more fun, and playing harder since their blowout loss to the Heat on Monday. He thinks they are doing well with two straight wins.

During the off season, Curry has just been working on his shooting, getting bigger and stronger, and watching a lot of D-League film to try to become a better player.

As a point guard, Curry sees himself as an extension of the coach and the coach on the court. Curry feels really good about his game, saying, “I never forgot how to play, but I just never got the chance. I just have to cease the moment.” He has been working on keeping his dribble alive, not getting in bad situations on the court, and knowing and controlling the tempo of the game.

The Bulls have to make a decision of whether they are keeping Curry on July 23rd.

Chuck Swirsky Interviews K.C. Johnson Recap

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Chuck Swirsky was able to interview K.C. Johnson, a writer for the Chicago Tribune at the Orlando Summer League.

Breaking down the Bulls moving forward, Johnson says Derrick Rose is the first addition. Next is to tackle the free agent situation. The Bulls are not going to make any moves until they have cost certainty with Ben Gordon and Luol Deng. The Bulls pride themselves on being a fiscally responsible organization. After that is sorted out, he thinks the Bulls will make a trade, but he has no idea who they’re targeting.

He thinks both Ben Gordon and Luol Deng took a step back last year, but he thinks it’s best to just wipe last year off the board entirely, because the entire team took a step back. He sees Gordon as a specialty player who can score in bunches but who has to improve his defense and decision making to become a complete player. He sees Luol Deng as a good player, who added a nice wrinkle in his game at the end of last year with some post moves. He thinks the questions about Deng’s athleticism are legitimate and that Deng needs to work on finishing at the rim.

Johnson wants to see the Bulls add another athletic big man. He thinks Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah are too big of question marks. He thinks the Bulls need one more athletic big man that can run the floor and also be a defensive presence. He has heard that Marcus Camby is available.

He does not see summer league as being important at all. HE has seen guys dominate summer league and do nothing in the NBA and has seen other guys do horrible go on to be great in the NBA. The Bulls are putting in an entire new offense and defense with a bunch of guys who won’t even be on the team during the season, so they should have been expected to be bad.

Derrick was upset after the game that no one was running the break with him. Derrick expects guys to be right up there with him. Noah and Thomas both have the ability to run the floor and they need to bring that this season.

Chuck Swirsky Post Game Interview With Vinny Del Negro Recap

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Chuck Swirsky interviewed Vinny Del Negro following the Bulls victory over the Indiana Pacers in their second summer league game.

Vinny was encouraged because the Bulls played hard today, and he thinks when you do that, good things usually happen. He thought the Bulls played better because they were more used to each other, and thought they played more physical. He thought that the game was just a better overall team effort.

So far, his entire system isn’t even in place. He has just showed the guys pieces of the system so far. He is just trying to get the guys (Derrick Rose, Tyrus Thomas, and Joakim Noah) all on the same page.

Vinny is going to continue to learn everyday and says that it feels great to be a coach.
