Rose To Defend Skills Challenge Title

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

According to Bulls.com, Derrick Rose will defend his Skills Challenge title that he won last year at Allstar Weekend.

Derrick Rose confirmed on Wednesday that he will take the court to defend his Taco Bell Skills Challenge title in Dallas next month during NBA All-Star weekend.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Rose from the Berto Center. “Last year, it was a great experience being there with my family. Just having the opportunity to be around the All-Stars; I can’t lie, it was fun. I appreciated that opportunity because it was so unbelievable.”

Last February, the Bulls guard became the first rookie to win the Skills Challenge when he defeated New Jersey’s Devin Harris in the championship round. Tony Parker and Mo Williams were the other participants. Past winners of the Skills Challenge include Deron Williams, Dwyane Wade (back-to-back) and Steve Nash.

Hopefully Rose puts forth more effort in this year’s contest than he did in last year’s. Winning is still impressive, but it seemed like Rose was just going through the motions last year, rather than aggressively going out there trying to win. Hopefully he brings his new aggressive passion that he has shown recently during games to the Skills Challenge, and just blows everyone out of the water, because he has the speed to do just that.

2009-2010 Season: Chicago Bulls 92 vs. San Antonio Spurs 85

Friday, October 30th, 2009

The Bulls came up big in the first game of the season yesterday, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 92-85 at the United Center.

The Bulls won in a total team effort, depending on a strong team defense and an even distribution of scoring.

Tim Duncan destroyed the Bulls, going for 28 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 blocks. That was okay, as the Bulls shutdown every other key player on the Spurs. Richard Jefferson only had 9 points on 3-9 shooting, Tony Parker had 8 points on 4-11 shooting, Manu Ginobili had 12 points on 3-11 shooting, and Antonio McDyess had 1 point on 0-4 shooting.

The Bulls effort was led by Luol Deng, who scored 17 points on 8-13 shooting. This is an encouraging start to the season, and if Deng can keep it up, the Bulls could push into the mid to high 40 in wins. However, I don’t think Deng can keep it up. In last night’s game, only 2 of Deng’s makes were near the basket. He was making his long jumper last night, and that is why he was so successful offensively last night. He did the same thing during the 2006-2007 season. This is why it’s a little hard to get too excited about Luol’s game tonight, he didn’t display any new ways he can score. If his midrange shot isn’t elite, like it hasn’t been for every year except 06-07, then Deng is going to score inefficiently, and be a hindrance on the offense.

On the flipside, John Salmons struggled, scoring 10 points on 3-15 shooting. He will have a lot better shooting nights than he did tonight, just a bad game for him.

The Bulls got terrific play at the point guard spot from Derrick Rose and Kirk Hinrich. Derrick Rose finished with 13 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds and Kirk Hinrich scored 14 points. Kirk Hinrich is easily the best backup point guard in the game, and the Bulls should be one of the top teams in the league in point guard production for the year.

The major reason that the Bulls were able to knock off the Spurs was because of the play of their front court. The Bulls got good production from their main three big men. Tyrus Thomas was impressive with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Joakim Noah had 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks, and Brad Miller had 9 points.

With the win, the Bulls start the season 1-0. They play the Boston Celtics later tonight in the early ESPN game.

Closing Comments and Season Outlook

The Bulls looked great in their season opener. Is this a sign that the Bulls are going to be a great team this year, and maybe take the fourth seed in the East? It could be, but I don’t think so.

The reason I don’t think so is because I don’t foresee Luol Deng playing like this every night, and even with good defense, other teams will score better than the Spurs did. Good offense beats good defense. I think what the Bulls will get out of Luol Deng is great defense, but very poor offensive production, and because of Deng’s lack of a three point shot, I think he might muddle up the offense a bit.

I think the big question of the season is how do the Bulls big men perform. That is, how do they perform on the defensive end of the court. If the Bulls big men step up, and play good interior defense, than the Bulls can be a good team, and challenge for the fourth seed in the East. If the Bulls big men play like they did last year, then this will be a forgettable year for Bulls fans.

Unfortunately, I don’t see the Bulls big men playing at an elite level on the defensive end all year. I think they will be better than last year, but the loss of Gordon will far outweigh the gains the Bulls make on the defensive end.

Where does this leave the Bulls? They won’t be a bad team, but they won’t be a very good team either. From what I have seen around the web, there is a general consensus that the Bulls will finish somewhere in this 35 to 45 win range. Las Vegas set 41.5 as the over/under for the Bulls record this season.

My personal prediction before last night was 38-44, but I’m going to ammend that to 39-43, because I didn’t think the Bulls would beat the Spurs last night. 39-43 is my prediction for the Bulls record this season, just missing out on the playoffs with the 9th seed. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Joakim Noah Forced To Withdraw From French National Team

Friday, July 31st, 2009

According to Eurobasket.com, Joakim Noah was forced by the Chicago Bulls to withdraw from the French National Team. The French National team is apparently, expected to file an appeal.

Joakim Noah (211-F/C-85, college: Florida) did not receive the clearance from his team Chicago Bulls to take participation at the upcoming qualifying games. Even though he started preparations and played at the Tournament in Strasbourg, Noah was forced to withdraw form the team even though he is not injured. It is expected that French Basketball will file an appeal with FIBA because of the treatment by the Chicago Bulls regarding Noah. It remains to bee seen how the situation will develop further, but everyone at French National Team are hoping Noah will get the clearance and will be able to help his team qualify for EuroBasket.

I’m not a fan of the way the Bulls are treating their players regarding international play this summer. It isn’t their right to stop these guys from playing internationally. They shouldn’t be directing their players one way or another on whether they should play internationally.

I think it would be a good experience for Joakim Noah to play for France. Noah would probably benefit from playing with a NBA champion like Tony Parker.

He can continue to do strength and basketball related workouts while playing in the qualifiers, and possibly the European Championship. Michael Jordan used to lift weights on game day, so Joakim Noah would probably be fine doing it as well.

Derrick Rose Wins 2009 Skills Challenge

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Devin Harris started off the competition sloppy, missing on both chest pass locations. Harris missed one jumpshot too, finishing with a time of 36.9 seconds.

Mo Williams came up and dogged it, going through the pylons really slow. He had trouble with the bounce pass zone and even had a little interference from the ball boy. He finished with a time of 37.5 seconds.

Rose didn’t seem to give it a full effort in the first round. But he did good in all of the passing zones, hitting all the passes on the first try. He missed one jumpshot. But he cruised to a 33.3 second time to cheers from Benny the Bull to qualify for the finals.

Tony Parker came out and did horrible, bouncing his first set of passes over and over again. He then bricked jumpshot after jumpshot and finished with a pathetic time of 50.8 seconds.

The championship round set up as Derrick Rose versus Devin Harris.

Devin Harris opened up the finals round. He struggled with the bounce pass and missed three jumpshots to finish with a time of 39.7 seconds, leaving it open for just a solid round by Derrick Rose needed to bring home the victory.

Derrick just cruised through the round. He had little mishaps, missing a jumpshot and the pass after the jumpshot. But Rose exploded to the finish with a thunderous dunk. Rose finished with a time of 35.3 seconds

After the competition, Rose told Cheryl Miler that the bounce pass was the toughest part of the competition.

Prior to the contest, none of the TNT analysts picked Rose to win the contest. That includes Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith, both who did not pick Rose as their winner earlier on Inside the NBA.

With that, Derrick Rose is the winner of the 2009 Playstation’s Skills Challenge.

San Antonio Spurs 92 at Chicago Bulls 87

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

With 33 seconds left, and down by 6, the Bulls needed perfection to pull off the win. The Bulls needed to make a quick three, and then get a stop on the other side of the ball. Within 2 seconds, the Bulls got the ball to Nocioni off the inbound play, and he was fouled by Parker. Nocioni made all three free throws. Bulls were now down 90 to 87. Now just to get the stop. The Bulls forced San Antonio down in the shot clock, Ginobili is in a bad situation, he pump fakes, gets Nocioni in the air, foul, three shots. Ginobili makes two free throws, and the Spurs win 92 to 87 at the United Center.

The biggest positive that can be taken away from tonight’s game is that it looks like the Bulls are back. The team has that same intensity that it did in 2006-2007. If the Bulls continue to play with this level of intensity, they will begin to steamroll the easier teams and get over .500 rapidly.

The shooting slump is over for Ben Gordon. He came out firing, hitting his first 5 shots in the game. Gordon finished with 20 points on 9-16 shooting and had 4 assists. The offensive performance was better than it looks from the box score, given that the Spurs were allowed to maul Gordon all game with no repercussions. Gordon also initiated some successful fastbreaks. On one, he had the ball in a two on one fastbreak, threw it up to Tyrus Thomas for the alley oop dunk. On the other, he found a cherry picking Luol Deng for the easy lay-in.

Derrick Rose had a really bad night, something that is becoming a trend. Rose finished with 12 points on 6-21 shooting and 8 assists. Rose has become an inefficient scorer, chucking up a lot of bad shots every game. He will make a pretty move, such as a spin into a layup over Tim Duncan tonight, that makes the fans forget about how bad he is doing on most offensive possessions. His assist numbers seem to just be the product of handling the ball so much, nothing special that he does in terms of creating for his teammates. His defense is an abomination. The only players that I’ve really seen that are as bad as Rose on the defensive end in the NBA are Adam Morrison and J.J. Redick. Comparing him to a rookie Gordon on the defensive end is just being nice.

If you are a Bulls fan, you have to be scared about what you’re seeing out of Rose. He is playing really bad basketball. He is an inefficient scorer and can’t defend a chair. Someone needs to hold him accountable for his poor play, and soon. Back in November, Rose looked like a near allstar and has since regressed a ton.

For the first time since coming back, Kirk Hinrich really struggled on the offensive end, scoring 4 points on 2-9 shooting. I have strong doubts of Kirk being the highly efficient scorer that he looked like in his games this season. I think it will be the same inconsistent Kirk that we’re all used to.

However, Kirk’s defense was dynamite. He locked down Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili during his stints in the game. When he was on them, they couldn’t do anything. Kirk’s defense since coming back has been simply amazing. Kirk over the last few games has been better defensively than Ron Artest or Bruce Bowen at their best over the last decade. If Hinrich keeps up this defense all long, you have to call him the best defender in the NBA. Hopefully there is more great defense from Hinrich to come.

I think Vinny made a bit of a mistake during the stretch run with his Hinrich and Gordon subs. With Bruce Bowen in the game, the Bulls could have hid Derrick Rose on Bowen, put Hinrich on Ginobili, and Gordon on Parker, and get away with it. If Vinny didn’t think a three guard lineup was a good idea, than at the very least, Rose should have been the guard on the bench down the stretch.

Andres Nocioni had a really nice game, finishing with 17 points and 15 rebounds. His intensity was great, and he was actually playing smart defense, and attacking the boards. He played more within the offense. So the question has to be raised, why hasn’t he been doing this all year? Why was he just being a chucker and playing lazy, stupid defense for most of the year? It’s just not tonight, his defense has looked better in a few other games this week.

Luol Deng also had a solid game, putting up 12 points 10 rebounds. Not a spectacular game, but solid, which is better than what the Bulls have gotten out of Deng most of the season. He made some really good jumpshots which kept the Bulls close.

For the Spurs, Tony Parker had 20 points and 8 assists. He got whatever he wanted against Rose. Gordon slowed him a little, and Hinrich completely shut him down. But when Rose was on Parker, he really torched us.

Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan both had nice games. Ginobili had 21 points and Duncan added in 18 points and 14 rebounds. They just did what they usually do. With all three of the Spurs big three playing well, they are a tough team to beat.

Matt Bonner had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Michael Finley and Drew Gooden both had 11 points in the game.

I really hate moral victories, because to get a moral victory means that you lost the game. But this was a good moral victory for the team. Just getting the team to play with a lot of intensity against a great team for 48 minutes is a win at this point.

With the loss, the Bulls fall to 18-23 on the season.

Bulls Beat #58 - Gordon’s played last game with Bulls?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Doug Thonus, of Bullsbeat.com released the 58th episode of the Bulls Beat podcast today. This one is all about Ben Gordon and his comments that he has probably played his last games with the Bulls. It is an excellent podcast, and it really puts some well thought out perspective on the entire Gordon situation.

Doug first points out that Gordon hedged on the question. Gordon didn’t specifically come out and say that he played his last game as a Bulls. If you actually go look at the full interview with Ben, he said that it just looks that way, unless the negotiations change.

Doug thinks that it will absolutely stink if Ben Gordon doesn’t return because he is either our best or 2nd best player. He thinks that the argument that the Bulls shouldn’t pay Gordon $10 million a year is absurd, because at $10 million a year you aren’t asking a guy to be a superstar. Doug says he wouldn’t take a player who is making less than $10 million, that doesn’t fall into one of three categories: 1. Is still on his rookie contract and will make big money when he’s eligible for an extension. 2. A player who got significantly better after he signed his contract, such as Caron Butler. 3. A player who took a pay cut to stay with a contender, such as Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.

He thinks that Gordon has sort of become a scapegoat for all of the team’s failures last year. Fans are venting their frustrations calling him short or inconsistent. He thinks it is absurd to think that someone like Jason Kapono could replace Gordon since he has a higher three point %. Doug contests that Gordon has to hit his threes off the dribble and while covered, while Kapono is completely wide open and set on all his threes. Kapono would have a low three point percentage if he had to make his the same way Gordon made his.

Doug thinks that Gordon is getting a raw deal. People are calling Ben a bench player, and using that as their point why Gordon shouldn’t be paid. In reality, Gordon isn’t a bench player, he has been 3rd or better in minutes every year he’s been with the Bulls. He’s a bench player since we elected to add scoring off the bench, not because he’s not good enough to start. Ben Gordon is on the floor in the important situations in games for the Bulls. Fans using this as an argument against Gordon are being intellectually dishonest.

He thinks that Gordon is bluffing. The Bulls won’t take crap back just to do Gordon a favor. They are going to want something really good for Gordon, not something like the 20th pick which they can just buy on draft night. Portland is the one team where Gordon is a good fit and they have the assets to make an attractive offer to the Bulls.

Options for Gordon if he’s not going to take the qualifying offer is to accept the Bulls offer or Europe. Europe screws him because he will still be a restricted free agent. Would be better for Gordon to bite the bullet and take the qualifying offer.

Doug also thinks that fans who think Ben Gordon isn’t worth the money because he can’t get an offer sheet are using a poor argument. The only team with any cap space is Memphis and they have a truckload of guards.

This situation can become nuclear for both the Bulls and Gordon. For Gordon, wanting more money is understandable, since he takes all the important shots and is the one aske to score on triple teams when they have to get points. Thinks if Gordon has another down year, he might only be looking at the MLE, or a little above it, if he can’t get back to that 2006-2007 level. I think personally, this is a little unfair, since Gordon’s efficiency once Skiles was fired was sky high, and he was at 20 PPG for the season before Boylan benched him after the Wallace trade. Also nuclear for the Bulls because if Gordon leaves, they will be flushing one of their best players for nothing.

Gordon is the perfect complement next to a great player, which Derrick Rose should be. Gordon can play great in a shooter, off the ball role while Derrick Rose dominates, but also can step up 20-25 games a year and win them by himself.

Doug thinks those saying we will survive losing our leading scorer, because it happened with Jamal and Eddy are fooling themselves. According to Doug, Jamal Crawford sucks at basketball and Eddy Curry had one good year with the Bulls, and became crap with the Knicks because he never worked on his weaknesses. Neither Eddy or Jamal made consistent positive impacts on games for the Bulls. Ben Gordon on the other hand has consistently positively impacted a game for the Bulls. We have won tons of games because of Ben’s scoring ability. Gordon’s +/- has been great except for last year with the Bulls, when everyone’s was bad. He thinks Ben Gordon, like Elton Brand, could be the one high draft pick we get rid of that comes back to bite us in the butt.

Also, Doug thinks the Bulls offense hasn’t been well suited for Gordon. He thinks we spent too much time doing a useless pick and roll with Ben Wallace in the corner, which exposed Gordon’s flaws. He thinks if Ben goes to another team, he could really improve just by being in a better offense. This has been a complaint of mine. The example I like to use is the 2006-2007 playoffs. In the series against the Heat, the Bulls had Gordon playing at the top of the key, and ran him in pick and rolls with Nocioni. Luol Deng always gets the credit for being the best player in this series, and he did good, but I think Gordon was the most dominant player in this series. Then in the Pistons series, we put Ben Gordon back in the corner, and the Pistons simply pinned him there, making him ineffective.

Doug absolutely does not want to send Gordon to Miami. Gordon, Wade, and Beasley would make too good of a team, and also Shawn Marion, the piece the Heat would have to give up, does nothing for us.

He thinks the Bull should go up around $66 million in their offer to Ben. Thinks the Bulls, when trading Andres Nocioni or Kirk Hinrich, should shed some money to find room to get under the luxury tax. Doug thinks Gordon’s stance is that he knows they are going to make moves after they sign him, and since they are willing to go right up to the luxury tax right now with Ben, he knows they won’t be taking more salary back in those trades, so the Bulls could get under the luxury tax before the tax is calculated, and Gordon can get a larger deal.

Doug thinks that Gordon is full of it, and that Ben Gordon will either take the qualifying offer and if not that, then probably the Bulls long term offer.
